The Discovery Channel is celebrating their 20th Anniversary of Shark Week.
And with this anniversary, they have launched two very cool online products
Shark Week Video Mixer: video & audio clips are now available with a web version of an iMovie-like editor. Fans can create their own videos and mix with clips from the show. Putting these tools in the hands of their fans is smart and fun. It's kind of funny that some of my favorite shows (like this one and this one), in addition to the Discovery Channel, are offering video mashup tools w/content.
Discovery also launched this super fun mobile sweepstakes with excellent prizes - all powered by our portfolio company, SendMe. Give it a try and good luck!
Thank you for the excellent evaluation of the Indianapolis sinking. However, many non-historians do not understand that the sinking of the USS Juneau in 1942 had similar results including the loss of the five Sullivan brothers. According to Dan Kurzman in Left to Die, the last of the brothers was actually in the water for three days when he became a victim to sharks.
I have wondered for years how many sinkings ended with similar results to the USS Indianapolis and Juneau. For example, how many of the 2500 or 2800 Japanese that went into the water at Midway died from exposure and sharks.
I would love to see a future Shark Week explore this question. Wouldn't it be interesting to see the stories from IJN veteran sailors who survived the sinking of their ship.
As a USN veteran and the nephew of a man lost in the battle of Ormoc Bay when the USS Cooper was sunk, I know that many other navies and sailors had to face the elements when their ships were sunk. Where are their stories?
