There is a lot of interest and excitement about new alternatives to Microsoft Office. Google has alternatives to Word, Excel and now Powerpoint. Just look at all of the links on techmeme to see the blogosphere's response.
I think its great that Google has launched these products with their own twist. But I'm not terribly excited. There have been alternatives for awhile now. And for the vast majority of users these alternatives probably solve the vast majority of our needs. I'm now using Keynote and even a text editor for simple needs. No problems.
What we corporate/business users need is an alternative to Microsoft Exchange. If not an alternative for MS Exchange we at least better client apps and web services that tie into Microsoft Exchange. Outlook is a mess and the mac version is worse. And Outlook web access is clunky. Why? Because we are addicted to the Blackberry. Blackberry/exchange integration is spectacular. Really amazing.
The addiction is so bad that we do silly things with our Crackberry. I've tried IMAP and pop3 but on they are just second class citizens for blackberry users.
Create alternatives to Exchange then we can really have some fun - including new devices like you know what.
